Stillman College SIAC Spring Sports Festival Update: Day 3

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- On the third day of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Championships the Stillman College Tiger men's track and field team performed well in the finals and the baseball team played two games to advance
to Sunday's championship game.Baseball: In the first game Stillman fell 13-0 to the Albany State University Rams. ASU scored two runs in the first inning and put four more on the scoreboard in the second. After a one inning drought the Rams scored two in the fourth, three in the sixth and the final two runs of the game in the sixth.
Demario Cash got the win, as he scattered four hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out four batters. Joseph Woodley (3-2) got the loss, as he gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in five innings of work. Marcus Whitfield, David Elsberry, Kevin Long, C.J. Richerzhagen each got a hit for Stillman.
In the second game Stillman beat Morehouse College 6-5. After scoring a run in the first inning the Tigers gave up a run in the second and two at the top of the third. At the bottom of the inning Stillman cut Morehouse's lead to 3-2. The Tigers put two more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth and another in the sixth. Morehouse scored a run in the seventh inning to make the score 5-4. Stillman responded with a run in the eight and held Morehouse to a run in the ninth for the victory.
Cody White (4-1) pitched nine innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits, for the win. He walked only one batter and struck out three. White helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 and recording two RBI. Whitfield went 1-for-2 with two runs and a RBI. Sanduan Dubose, Sean Blair, Elsberry, and Long each got a hit and scored a run for Stillman.
Stillman will face Albany State for the 2006 SIAC baseball championship. The game is scheduled to start at 10 am.
Track & Field: Brian Witherspoon won Stillman's first SIAC championships in track and field. Witherspoon took first place in the men's 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. He as he finished with a time of 10.49 seconds. Witherspoon was followed by Albany State's Rodney Coley (10.51), and Jeffery Mosley from Fort Valley State (10.71).
In the 200 meters Witherspoon finished with a 21.09 mark. He was followed by Coley (21.14) and Joshua Williams from Benedict College (21.22).
Jason Mims finished in third place in the pole vault.
The 2006 SIAC Spring Sports Festival will continue on Sunday, April 16 with the baseball championship game at 10 am. General admission is $5.

Stillman College SIAC Spring Sports Festival Update: Day 2

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- On the second day of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Championships the Stillman College Tigers continued to contend for conference championships. One team was eliminated, but another advanced to the quarter final round.
Baseball: The Tigers (# 2 seed in West Division) overcame an 11-6 deficit in going into the sixth inning to beat the Benedict College Tigers (# 1 seed in East Division) 16-14 at the Tuscaloosa Academy field Friday evening.
Benedict put six runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings. Stillman cut the lead to two points in the third. In the fourth inning Stillman added two more runs, but at the bottom of the inning Benedict scored five runs to make the score 11-6. The Tigers responded by scoring two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth inning and three in the seventh. Benedict added three more runs in the last five innings and Stillman scored the final run of the game in the eighth to secure the victory.
Chase Stewart (3-4) picked up the win. He allowed three runs on four hits. Andrew Brown earned his first save of the season, as allowed only one hit, while striking out three batters in 1.2 innings of work. Sanduan Dubose and Cody White led the Stillman attack. Dubose went 3-for-5 with six RBI, and three runs scored (1 HR). White went 2-for-6 with three RBI, two runs (1 HR). Josh Massey went 2-for-4 with two runs, and Marcus Whitfield and Sean Blair each recorded two hits and scored two runs .
Stillman (25-21) will next play on Saturday, April 16 at 10 am at the Stillman Baseball-Softball Complex. The Tigers will face the Albany State University Rams (# 2 East in Division). The Rams beat Miles College 13-8 Friday afternoon on the Stillman campus. Saturday's game will be the first meeting this season between the two teams.
Softball: The Lady Tiger softball team was eliminated from tournament play by the Albany State Lady Rams (# 2 in East) Friday afternoon at the Stillman Baseball-Softball Complex. ASU beat Stillman 8-3. After scoring two runs in the first three innings the Lady Rams put the game out of reach in the fourth, scoring six runs. Stillman scored a run in the fourth and the final two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
Robyn Beaty (24-12) got the loss. She went six innings and allowed six earned runs on seven hit, while striking out three batters. Sierra Williams led the Lady Tigers. She went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Beaty and Kennesse Bass each scored a run in the losing effort.
Track & Field: Brian Witherspoon will represent Stillman in the men's 200 meter dash on Saturday at 3:30 pm . The Tiger men's 4 x 100 meter relay team will compete in that events finals at 1:10 pm.
The 2006 SIAC Spring Sports Festival will continue on Saturday, April 15 with events beginning at 10 am. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and under..

Stillman College SIAC Spring Sports Festival Update

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- On the first day of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Championships the Stillman Tiger teams are making their bids for conference championships.
Baseball: In Stillman's opening game for the conference championships the # 2 seeded Tigers defeated the # 5 seed in Clark Atlanta University. Stillman won 16-6 to improve to a 24-21 overall record, while CAU falls to a 4-23 mark. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Stillman scored eight runs at the bottom of the second and three more in the third to put the game away.
Josh Godfrey (1-5) pitched a complete game to pick up the win. In seven innings of work he gave up six runs on 10 hits and walked two batters. He also struck out six batters. Marcus Whitfield led Stillman, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Three other Tigers recorded two hits and two runs. Sanduan Dubose went 2-for-4 with two runs, and two RBI, Shannon Smith went 2-for-4 and scored two runs and Casey Orr went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Stillman will next play on Friday, April 14 at 12:30 pm at Tuscaloosa Academy. Stillman will play the winner of the #1 Benedict College and #6 Paine College game.
Softball: The Lady Tiger softball team finished day one with a 2-1 tournament record. In the opening game Stillman the 3rd seed beat Clark Atlanta 3-2. Robyn Beaty got the win in seven innings of work. She allowed two runs off of three hits, while recording four strike outs. Chanse Worthington led Stillman with two hits a run and a RBI.
In the second game Stillman fell 14-7 to # 1 Kentucky State. Beaty got the loss. She pitched six innings allowed 14 runs off of 20 hits, while recording only one strike out. Sierra Williams led the Stillman offense. She went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
In the third game the Lady Tigers bounced back to beat # 6 Lane 18-1 in five innings. Beaty picked up the win to improve to a 24-11 record. Kasia Cunningham went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for Stillman.
Stillman will play # 2 Albany State on Friday at 10 am.
Track & Field: Brian Witherspoon advanced to the finals in the men's 200 meter dash. Witherspoon won the fourth heat with a 21.41 time, which placed him third overall in the preliminaries. The Stillman men's 4 x 100 meter relay team also advanced to the finals. The Tigers
The men's 200 meter dash finals will be held on Saturday, April 15 at 3:30 pm at the Stillman Stadium Athletic Complex. The men's 4 x 100 meter relays are scheduled to start at 1:10 p.m.
Tennis: The Stillman men's and women's tennis teams both lost on the first day. The #6 Tigers fell 5-0 to 4th seeded LeMoyne Owen College. The 7th seeded Lady Tigers fell 5-3 to # 2 Tuskegee.
The 2006 SIAC Spring Sports Festival will continue on Friday, April 14 with events beginning at 10 am. For Friday's games no admission will be charged.

Four Tigers named All-SIAC at Spring Sports Banquet

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- In the opening banquet for the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Championships members of the Stillman College baseball, softball women's track and field and women's tennis teams were recognized for their outstanding play and academic excellence. Four Tigers received awards in Birthright Hall Wednesday night.
Robyn Beaty, the Lady Tigers starting pitcher for softball, was named to the All SIAC first team. Beaty recorded and impressive 22-10 record this season. She was the only Stillman player to make first team. Stillman baseball player Josh Massey was named to the All-Conference second team at right field. In 37 games played Massey has a .377 batting average, 28 runs, 43 hits, and 18 RBI. Lady Tiger tennis player, Andrea Adams, received a All-Conference second team nod. In individual match play she was 7-6 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC. Ashley Hill, a tennis player, was the only Stillman player to make an All-Academic team. The sophomore from Birmingham, AL has a 3.5 grade point average and is majoring in Business.
The first day of competition will begin on Thursday morning at 9 am. For the remainder of the week the games will begin at 10 am. The track and field, softball and tennis events will conclude on Saturday, with the championship games. The baseball championship will be decided on Sunday at the Stillman Athletic Complex.
The #2 seeded Stillman baseball team will play at 11:30 am at Tuscaloosa Academy on April 13. The #3 seeded softball team will begin tournament play at 10 am on second softball field on the Stillman campus. The 6th seeded Tiger tennis team will play at 11 am at Bowers Park and the women's team is scheduled to play at 1 pm. All track and field events will start at 9 am at Stillman Stadium.
On Thursday and Friday no admission will be charged. For Saturday's softball and track and field championships adults admission is $10 and children 12 years and under is $5. For Sunday's baseball championship a $5 general admission fee will be charged.

Lady Tigers increase streak to seven games with sweep of LeMoyne-Owens

TUSCALOOSA, AL--- The Stillman College softball team improved to a 21-11 overall record and a seven-game winning streak by beating the LeMoyne-Owen College Lady Magicians in a double-header at the Stillman Stadium Complex. The Lady Tigers won the first game 13-5 and the second 3-2 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon.
In the opener Stillman scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second. LeMoyne-Owen responded with a five run third inning to cut Stillman's lead to 7-5. The Lady Tigers offensively controlled the rest of the game by scoring two run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Chanse Worthington led the Stillman offensive, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. LaGina Harris also went 3-for-4 with three runs and Carol Taldon added three hits and a run. Robyn Beaty (22-10) picked up the win for Stillman as she went seven innings. She allowed five hits while striking out four batters.
Kelly Parker led the LeMoyne-Owen attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Jackie Brown got the loss as she pitched six innings and gave up 14 hits .
In the second game the Lady Tigers trailed for the first three innings. The Lady Magicians took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and increased it to 2-0 in the sixth. In the seventh inning Stillman took a page out of LeMoyne-Owens' book of spells to score three runs for the win.
Kasia Cunningham, Taldon, and Saquindra Pugh each reached home plate with Pugh scoring the game winning run. Pugh led Stillman offensively as she went 2-for-3. Cunningham and Taldon each recorded their only hits in the seventh inning. Beaty got the win for Stillman in another seven innings of work. She seven hits and struck out six.
Lekeila Genous and Brown scored LeMoyne-Owens' two runs. Brown got the loss.
Stillman will return to action on Thursday, April 13 for the first day of the SIAC Spring Sports Championships. The softball tournament will take place on the Stillman Campus.

Lady Tigers sweep Tuskegee

TUSCALOOSA, AL--- The Stillman College softball team improved to a 19-11 overall record and a 16-9 conference mark by sweeping the Tuskegee University Lady Tigers in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double-header Thursday afternoon. Stillman won the first game 5-3 and the second 2-1.
In the first game of the twin bill Tuskegee scored its first run in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. at the bottom of the fifth Stillman stormed back, scoring three runs to tie the game up. The Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the sixth inning to get the win.
Kasia Cunningham led the Stillman offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Chanse Worthington and Stephanie Harris each went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Harris also scored a run for Stillman. Sierra Williams, Carol Taldon and Kennesse Bass scored a run each by reaching base on balls. Robyn Beaty went all seven innings to pick up the win. She allowed three runs on six hits, while striking two batters out.
Edna Craig led the Tuskegee attack, going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Antanette Wynn got the loss as she pitches 6.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits, while striking out four.
In the second game the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first and second innings. The two runs proved to be enough as Stillman allowed only one Tuskegee score.
Tara Pascley led the Lady Tigers by going 2-for-2 with a run scored. LaGina Harris scored Stillman's other run. She reached base twice on walks. Beaty (18-11) picked up the win in five innings of work. She recorded four strikeouts, while allowing four hits and a run.
Stillman will return to action April 8 and 9 as the Lady Tigers host LeMoyne-Owen College in SIAC action.

Lady Tigers split with Fort Valley State

Fort Valley, GA---The Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats took one of two games against the Lady Tigers of Stillman College Wednesday evening at Lady Wildcat field. In the first game, the Lady Cats cracked out 18 hits and scored 14 runs to claim the first contest 14-0. Akeno Sadler sparked the Lady Wildcats by going 4-for-4, scoring three runs and knocking in 3 RBI’s thanks to an inside the park home run. Tiffany Arnold pitched a shutout and gave up only one hit.
In the second game, Stillman rebounded to defeat the Lady Wildcats 8-6. Kimberly Tanner went 2-for4 with one run and an RBI in leading the Lady Wildcats offense. Robyn Beaty was the winning pitcher for Stillman. Fort Valley’s record now stands at 22-15 while Stillman improves to 18-12.
Stillman will return to action on Thursday as the Lady Tigers host Tuskegee University in a SIAC double-header.

Lady Tiger Softball To Open Saturday

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- The Stillman College softball team will open the 2006 season on Saturday, Feb. 4 when the Lady Tigers host Clark Atlanta University in a SIAC double-header.
Albert Stinson will return for his fourth season as head coach for the Lady Tigers. Stillman finished the 2005 season with a 14-15 record, the team's best in six years.
Returning from last year's team are Kasia Cunningham, Tara Pascley, Carol Taldon, and Sierra Williams. Cunningham posted a .358 batting avg. and 15 RBI, Pascley .324 with 16 RBI, Taldon .289 and nine RBI, and Williams .408 and 18 RBI. Cunningham was Stillman's second best pitcher, as she finished with a 2-2 record and a 4.50 ERA.
Stinson has several transfer students that he expects to make an immediate impact. Robyn Beaty is a transfer from Angelo State University, LaGina Harris is a transfer from Shelton State CC, Raashida Muhammad is a transfer from Hood College, and Chanse Worthington came to Stillman from Grayson County College.
Stillman has 37 games scheduled, with 23 contests being played at the Stillman Baseball-Softball Complex. Stillman will also host the 2006 SIAC Spring Sports Championship from April 13-16.

Stillman athletes receive academic honors

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- Three Stillman student-athletes were named to the 2005 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar list. Tameika Crimbley, Sherita McGee, and James Anthony Sullivan are the Stillman students to receive the honors. Crimbley received a second team nod and McGee and Sullivan were named to the third team.
Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, every college and university in the country is invited to participate in this annual award by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses and in their communities.
This season Crimbley, a senior native of Atmore, led the Lady Tiger basketball team in blocked shots (129 total, 4.8/game), rebounds (221 total, 8.2/game), field goal percentage (.554), and was second in points scored (298 total, 11/game).
McGee, a senior from Selma, AL, led the Lady Tiger softball team in fielding percentage (.972). She also recorded 16 hits and 10 runs scored during the 2005 season.
Sullivan, a senior from Maplesville, AL, served mainly on special teams for the Tiger football team. He returned five punts for 35 yards.

Stillman mourns loss of Assistant Softball Coach

TUSCALOOSA, AL--- The Stillman College Athletics Department is saddened by the death of one of our own, Mrs. Cresandra Wesley, who passed away on Sunday April 24. The College community will remember Mrs. Wesley as the Assistant Softball Coach and also the wife of Mr. Quentin Wesley of Wesley Security.
Coach Wesley has assisted head softball coach Albert Stinson over the last two seasons.
"She was a blessing to me as a co-worker and a friend," Stinson said. "I am very saddened by the loss of coach Wesley and the players and I will miss her greatly."
Coach Wesley’s funeral will be on Saturday, April 30 at 10 a.m. at the First African Baptist Church on Stillman Boulevard in Tuscaloosa.
Stillman will hold the 2004-05 Athletics Banquet in Coach Wesley's honor on Wednesday night.

Whitfield ranked in top 20 in softball stats

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- Coming off of finishing the 2005 softball season several Lady Tigers are among the national statistical leaders in NCAA Division III. The Stillman Lady Tigers softball team finished the season with a 14-15 record, the teams best record in five seasons.
Faith Whitfield, a senior infielder from Louisville, MS, is ranked # 15 in batting average, hitting at a .484 average. She is also ranked # 8 in RBIs (1.41/game), # 5 in doubles (.55/game).
As a provisional NCAA Division II member Stillman's statistical information will be processed through D-III until the reclassifying period is completed.

Stillman - LeMoyne Owen Softball games postponed

TUSCALOOSA, AL --- The Stillman and LeMoyne Owen softball games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed because of the rain. Stillman was scheduled to face the Lady Magicians in a double header on Saturday, April 2 and second double header on Sunday.
The two teams will try to reschedule the games on a later date.

Lady Tigers split double header

MARION, AL---The Stillman softball team improved to a 7-8 record by splitting a double header with the Judson College Lady Eagles Tuesday afternoon. Stillman lost the first game 8-3 and rebounded to take the second game 10-5.
In the opener of the doubleheader Judson put up a run in both the first and second innings. The Lady Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third inning as Telisha Odom and Angenetta Sturdivant scored on a Sierra Williams sacrifice fly, tying the game at 2-2. At the bottom of the third Judson reclaimed its lead, scoring three more runs.
The Lady Eagles put up an insurance run in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth. Shenita Riles scored Stillman's final run of the game, reaching home on a Latonya Jackson single.
Saquindra Pugh took the loss for Stillman, as she gave up eight hits and recorded one strike out in seven innings of work. Katie Ubanks picked up the win for Judson, recording three strike outs and giving up three hits.
In the second game Pugh bounced back to get the win, giving up only six hits. The Lady Tigers got on the scoreboard first as Kasia Cunningham stole home in the first inning. Stillman scored another run in the third as Williams reached base on a triple and scored on a Tara Pascley single. Judson scored its first run of the game in the second inning and added two more in the third.
In the fifth inning the Lady Tigers exploded offensively as Faith Whitfield, Riles, Jackson and Sturdivant all scored runs. Judson scored in the fifth and seventh. In the sixth and seventh innings Stillman added three runs to preserve the win.
Odom, Cunningham, Paisley, Whitfield, and Pugh each recorded three hits for Stillman .
Charity Fondrea took the loss for Judson.
Stillman will return to action Thursday, Mar. 17 as the Lady Tigers host Judson College in a two game series at the Stillman Stadium Complex. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start time.

Lady Tigers take two from Miles

TUSCALOOSA, AL---The Lady Tiger softball team improved to a 4-record by beating Miles College 3-1 and 10-2 in a twin bill Sunday evening.
In the first game of the doubleheader Miles scored its only run in the first inning. Stillman scored one run in the second and third innings each.
Faith Whitfield led Stillman three hits and a run scored. Saquindra Pugh recorded one hit, one run and one RBI for the Lady Tigers.
Joe Pearson led Miles with two hits and Keila Haynes scored the Lady Golden Bears' only run.
Pugh picked up the win for Stillman as she recorded two strike outs in seven innings of work. Heather Hamilton got the loss for Miles.
In the second game the Lady Tigers took the early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth. The Lady Golden Bears scored their only two runs in the third inning. Stillman put the game out of reach by added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Whitfield and Pugh led the Lady Tigers with two hits each. Whitfield also scored two runs and two RBI. Pugh recorded a run and two RBI.
Pugh got the win for the nightcap by going seven innings and giving up only four hits.
Stillman will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 15 as the Lady Tigers travel to Marion, AL to face Judson College in a two game series.
