Tigers looking forward to next season

Mar. 13, 2006

CLEVELAND, MS --- Stillman College had just come within a whisker of knocking off the nation’s top-ranked team in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday and Leon Douglas was already looking ahead.

The Tigers capped their first season in Division II with a 21-10 record after losing to No. 1 Delta State, 76-70, in the NCAA South Region Tournament. Stillman led by 11 points at halftime and by one point with less than two minutes to go in the game.

“One thing I’m proud of is I’ve got something to build on," said Stillman head coach Leon Douglas, a former University of Alabama and NBA standout. “I’m losing five guys that built this program, but I’ve got some other guys coming back.

“This game is over. We look forward to the future. We’ll be better next year. We’ll be back in this tournament."

Stillman might still be playing had senior forward Wayne Bender not been suffering from a knee injury that kept him out of the starting lineup and limited him to 12 minutes. Without the 6-foot-8 Bender in the lineup, fellow senior Paul Shields filled in admirably in defending Delta State’s mammoth 6-8 Jasper Johnson, the region’s player of the year, but Bender’s absence was felt on the offensive end.

“Wayne’s my second-leading scorer," Douglas said. “It’s hard to sit 16 points down. He wanted to play, but as his coach and his friend I couldn’t let him do that."

The Tigers will lose Bender and Shields, along with guards Ricky Gibson, Joshua Warren and Dannelle Smith from a team that won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in its first year of full league membership.

The key returnee will be 6-6 forward Monyea Pratt, Stillman’s leading scorer and rebounder at 15.4 points and 8.3 boards per game. He believes the Tigers can take things to a higher level next season, when he will be a senior.

“We just have to have a good recruiting class and work hard," he said. “It all starts at 5:30 in the morning [with conditioning sessions]. It’s helps a lot that we have a lot of people coming back who played this year."

Chris Malone, a guard who started 10 games as a freshman this season, said the 2005-06 senior class will be missed, but he’s confident Stillman will be able to maintain the standards set this season.

“I think we can replace them," he said. “It will be pretty tough. What we’re losing is leadership, but the talent is there."

Gibson, who was Stillman’s third-leading scorer at 12.6 points per game, is proud to be part of a group that improved from 13-14 two seasons ago in Douglas’ first year as head coach.

“It feels good," he said. “This is the first time Stillman has ever made it to the NCAA Tournament in Division II and this senior class will be remembered as the class that did it and got it started."

Gibson also believes that the program is in good hands with the returning players.

“We had 12 guys," he said. “All 12 guys could have started. They all know what it means to get here and how hard they have to work."

Delta State gets win over tough Tiger team in NCAA Tourney

Mar. 12, 2006

CLEVELAND, MS --- The Stillman College men's basketball team's 2005-06 season came to an end Saturday night as the #8 seeded Tigers gave the #1 seed Delta State all it could handle in a 76-70 loss in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament South Regional.

The Delta State University Statesmen (30-1), #1 ranked team in NCAA D-II, needed every second of the quarterfinal match-up withto escape with a victory. With the loss the Tigers fall to 20-11.

Stillman came into their second overall, but first ever D-II, post-season tournament as the #8 seed, but did not play that way. The Tigers jumped out of the gate nailing shot after shot in building a 40-29 halftime lead. Stillman shot 44-percent from the floor and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line in the opening half.

Early foul trouble for Statesmen didn’t seem to help matters either as the Tigers just couldn’t miss a shot. Forced to play a not so aggressive defense, Delta State looked helpless at times against the Tigers. Despite shooting 46-percent, the Statesmen couldn’t muster a free throw opportunity in the first half.

Delta State came out of the locker-room and immediately picked up the intensity going on a 19-11 run in the opening minutes of the second half. The Statesmen cut the lead to three with 14:00 minutes remaining. Delta State's shooting improved to 61 percent and Stillman fell to 39 percent.

Delta State took their first lead at the 7:28 mark on a pair of made free throws. DSU would go on to outscore Stillman 15-9 over the final seven minutes to preserve the win.

Jeremy Richardson led the Statesmen with 21 points, while Jasper Johnson picked up 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Travis DeGroot finished with 11 points, nine assists and five rebounds.

Monyea Pratt finished with a game-high 24 points and five boards.
