April 29, 2008

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Brian Witherspoon is now a Jacksonville Jaguar.

Stillman’s former standout defensive back, who went undrafted in this weekend’s NFL draft, signed a three-year free-agent contract with the Jaguars. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I’m upset that I didn’t get drafted, but I’m glad I ended up with Jacksonville,” Witherspoon said. “There was a lot of interest from other teams throughout the entire draft, but Jacksonville presented the best chance for me to start because they want me mainly on special teams.

“I was just wanted the best opportunity to play.”

The return specialist went into this year’s draft projected as high as a 5th round pick and the highest rated defensive back from a Division II school. A 2008 preseason All-America choice, Witherspoon helped Stillman to a 7-4 record and a fourth place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference final standings.

Witherspoon recorded two interceptions with 31 tackles and seven pass deflections as a defensive back in his senior season. He also recorded touchdowns on special teams including a punt return on senior day.
