Greg Thompson (Head Coach)

Greg Thompson was named Stillman’s sixth head football coach, and only the second since the sport was reinstated in 1999, on February 15, 2006. Thompson came to Stillman in 2004 as the offensive coordinator.

Thompson began his coaching career in 1976 as the quarterbacks coach at Morris Brown. He then moved to Baton Rouge, LA to serve as Southern University’s quarterbacks coach. In 1981 he returned to Morris Brown as Offensive Coordinator under Head Coach Lambert Reed. Thompson was named interim Head Coach in the final two games of the season after Reed’s dismissal.

He was officially named as Morris Brown’s Head

Coach prior to the 1982 season. The Wolverines posted a 7-4 record in Thompson’s first full year as head coach, the programs best since being named Black National Champions in 1951. A year later he was appointed to the dual role of head coach and Director of Athletics, positions he held until 1995.

In 1995 he traveled across town and became the Offensive Coordinator and Athletic Academic Advisor for undergraduates at Clark Atlanta University. In 2000 he returned to Morris Brown, which had just made the transition from NCAA Division II to D-IAA, as offensive coordinator.

Over his coaching career Thompson has gained respect from his peers for his well coached and disciplined teams. From 1983-1995 he served as chairman of the SIAC Coaches Association.

In 1979 he was inducted into the Morris Brown Athletic Hall of Fame and inducted into the Atlanta University Hall of Fame in 1987.

He has also received honors from the Birmingham Grid Forecasters in 1985 and was named Coach of the Year by the Extra Point Club of Atlanta in 1982, 1983, 1985 and 1987.
