Stillman Named TJF School of the Month for October 2005

Tom Joyner, “The Fly Jock,” is known as the hardest working man in radio. This year the Tom Joyner Foundation is working on behalf of Stillman, one of 11 Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs) to be named as a School of the Month for 2005. All of the donations to the Tom Joyner Foundation during the month of October will be used for scholarships for deserving Stillman students. Contributions from corporate sponsors as well as individual donations from alumni and friends will assure that selected Stillman students will be able to overcome the financial need that may make the difference between staying in school and dropping out.

The Foundation has been assisting students at HBCUs since 1998. During that time, the designated colleges and universities have increased their scholarship funds by an average of $200,000 per school. The radio program hosted by Joyner is featured in 115 markets reaching approximately 8 million listeners.

Stillman Awarded $1.7 Million Grant

Forty years after its passage, the federal Higher Education Act is still providing critical funding to Stillman College.

This year, under Title III part B, Stillman got about $1.79 million in taxpayer money to help pay for a broad range of campus needs. That’s up slightly from the grant received in 2004.
For Stillman, a small private college with a budget of about $35 million, the grant is crucial. If it were a private donation, there probably would be a ceremony, said Ulysses Bell, vice president for institutional advancement.

“Title III helps take care of needs that you can’t raise private dollars to cover," Bell said. “It’s always an important source of financial support."
