Stillman Mourns the Loss of Oldest Living Alumnus
Mrs. Ollie Simmons, who was the oldest living Stillman College alumnus, passed on October 20, 2013 in Stafford, Virginia. She was a native of Samantha, Alabama, and a graduate of the Tuscaloosa County Schools. Mrs. Simmons completed her formal degree at Stillman Institute (now Stillman College) in 1929.
Over the span of her professional career, she worked as a cosmetologist and was employed by the American Motors Corporation and Ames Bag (now Tekpak, Inc.) in Marion, Alabama. She also served as the musician at local churches in the county. She was applauded for her wisdom and contributions to her community and to Stillman College.
In April, 2013, she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. Mrs. Simmons was the last of eleven children born to Charlie Luther Rich, Jr. and Gertrude Johnson Rich.
In a formal resolution signed by Dr. Peter E. Millet, Interim President of Stillman College, the institution offered gratitude and appreciation for her life, and pride in honoring the legacy she leaves behind.
