Stillman Commencement Full of Memorable Moments
- 5-10-2011
TUSCALOOSA, AL—Sports journalist Stephen A. Smith, the speaker for Stillman’s 135th Commencement, urged graduates to take the education they have obtained to immediately begin their professional journeys.
A native of Hollis, Queens, who built his foundation as a journalist over the course of 17 years in New York and Philadelphia, Smith reminded the class of 2011 that they had not arrive at this point on their own. “Many people have supported and encouraged you the way. Your parents and family have sacrificed to get you here and now it’s your turn to step up,” said Smith. “Look to your left. Now look to your right. Thos of you who hit the ground running on Monday instead of loafing around all summer will miles ahead of game.”
Also during the ceremony, highest-ranking member of the graduating class, Anes Hrnjic shared his experience as a Stillman student while giving senior class reflections. Hrnjic, a native of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, received a bachelors of science degree in business administration and finished his curriculum in 3 years. During his three years at the College, Hrnic helped lead the Tigers tennis team to their first-ever, regular season tennis championship. “Anes was the first step into building the Men Tennis Team into a recognizable program. I am glad to see him graduate and wish him much success”, said Head Coach Will Riley.
Stillman President Ernest McNealey acknowledged the loss of former student athlete, William Stevens. Stevens lost his life shielding two friends from the tornado that ripped through the city of Tuscaloosa. Stevens was scheduled to receive his bachelor of arts with honors in history. Accepting his degree on behalf of the family was his sister, Taylor.
In addition to the awarding of degrees, Lt. Col. James Shaver, Professor of Military Science for the University of Alabama ROTC Program, administered the Oath of Commission in the Army to now Second Lieutenant Donnie Jennings. During his undergraduate career, Jennings was a member of the men’s track and field team and football team.
One of the highlights of the this year’s ceremony was the presentation the fiftieth year reunion class of 1961. Donning gold robes and mortar boards Margaret Zimmerman Beard, Luerine Calmes, Christopher Columbus Carswell, Dorothy Taylor Carter, James Dudley, Carrie Ball Hardy Hunter, Tommie J. Johnson, and Abraham Kennard walked the stage to shake hands with President McNealey and receive their golden diplomas.
