SGA Installation Ceremony and Miss Stillman Coronation Set for Sept. 22
- 9-21-2011
Stillman senior, Anthony Heaven, will serve as the Student Government Association (SGA) president for the 2011-2012 academic year. The SGA Installation Ceremony will officially welcome the new president and his cabinet on Thursday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m. in Birthright Auditorium.
Heaven is a native of Columbus, Miss., majoring in history. Heaven has been involved in SGA since his arrival at Stillman. Last year, he served as executive vice-president for the group. He attributed former SGA presidents for sparking his interest in serving as president.
“They were able to accomplish so much for the student body, and they positively impacted the entire Stillman College community,” said Heaven. He also expressed wanting to serve as a “true link between students and administrators” and to “show students that the Stillman experience is a personalized experience made with each student in mind.”
When asked what he is most excited about in his new role, he responded, “I am most excited about being able to work for my peers, helping them develop and promote their ideas. We as students have so many great ideas, but so often we do not know how to articulate what it is that we actually want. When they bring those ideas forward and we begin to brainstorm, it is an exciting process. Seeing the idea move on to reality is even better.”
Heaven highlighted working with the freshman class as one of the most enjoyable aspects of his new role. “They have so many great, fresh ideas and are so eager to learn and get involved,” he said.
Erica Watts, a senior from Selma, Ala., will be formally crowned Miss Stillman 2011-2012 in a coronation ceremony on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Birthright. Watts, an elementary education major, hit the ground running from the day she enrolled at Stillman. She participated in the Stillman Choir her freshman year. She also served as head residence assistant (RA) at Wynn Hall and as Vice President for Academic Affairs for the Student Government Association (SGA). She is a member of the Chancellorette Social Club and serves as the Community Coordinator for Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Watts’ scholastic honors include the Presidential Scholar since Fall 2008 and she is a 2010 Magic City Classic Scholarship Recipient.
“The most fun thing about my college experience at Stillman has been meeting all the wonderful people. I have made so many great friends. The most challenging thing has been to remember to stop working and rest sometimes. I think a lot!”
