Student Achievement

In order to assess student achievement, Stillman analyzes a variety of data that measure students’ success in college and in preparing students to be productive citizens after graduation.  These data sets provide an assessment of the extent to which Stillman has achieved its goals of producing graduates who:

  • Exhibit competence in their discipline;
  • Qualify for admission to and success in graduate and professional schools or for entry into selected careers; and
  • Manifest the ability to do independent research, demonstrate objective scholarship, and exhibit creative production/performance appropriate to their disciplines.

The data sets measured include degrees awarded by discipline, course completion, retention and graduation rates, placement in graduate and professional schools, and teacher certification.  The tables below summarize these indicators of student success.

Course Completion

Stillman measures student achievement each semester in terms of passing grades awarded within the General Education Curriculum and by each Academic Department.  Earning passing grades within the General Education Curriculum and within the Academic Department ensure that a student will be making progress towards completing degree requirements.  The U.S. Department of Education requires that students complete 67% or more of all courses for which they enroll.  Therefore, Stillman uses this percentage as a benchmark for completion rates of the various subject areas.   This assessment allows the College to monitor the success of each Academic Department.
