Junior Galette, an All-SIAC performer for the Stillman football team last season, is on the active roster with the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, who start the NFL season tonight against the Minnesota Vikings.
Galette, who will wear jersey No. 93, is listed as a 6-foot-2, 258-pound defensive end.
A native of Haiti who grew up in New Jersey, Galette began his college career at Temple University, where he received honorable mention on the 2006 Sporting News Freshman All-American team. He transferred to Stillman for his senior season and recorded 56 tackles. He ranked second in the SIAC with 9.5 sacks.
Sammie Lee Hill, another former Stillman defensive lineman, is preparing for his second season in the NFL. Hill, who is from West Blocton, played in 13 games last season and started in 12 for the Detroit Lions. He recorded 14 solo tackles and 12 assists. Hill, who wore No. 79 as a rookie, has switched to jersey No. 91. Detroit opens at Chicago on Sunday.
Former Stillman running back Quinn Porter, who led the SIAC in rushing last season with 1,247 yards, was placed on injured reserve by the Green Bay Packers late in August, according to a post on the Packers’ website.
Defensive back Brian Witherspoon, the first Stillman player to land in the NFL, was waived by the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, according to the Carolina website. Witherspoon played in 14 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008. In 2009, he played in nine games with Jacksonville and one with Detroit.
