The Division of Education is composed of the Teacher Education Program, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Physical Education and Department of Psychology. The major function of the first three departments in the  division is the preparation of individuals to become effective professional educators. The division operates within a conceptual framework, the Effective Professional Educator, that includes competency in the following areas:  subject and pedagogical content knowledge and skills, professional values and dispositions, technology, diversity and research. The Division develops in students the dispositions of responsibility, commitment, and high ethical standards.  The conceptual framework guiding the programs and processes of the unit is based on sound knowledge derived from educational research, informed theory, the wisdom of practice, educational standards, and policies.

The primary purpose of the division is to prepare effective, well-trained elementary or secondary teachers who desire to serve children and youth, the community, the teaching profession, and society. The focus on competence in the discipline, professional values and dispositions, and enrichment in diversity and technology ties into the college’s mission. This responsibility is undertaken with the express purpose of developing and offering high quality programs of study designed to produce teachers who demonstrate and are committed to excellence and competence in their professions and to quality leadership and service in society. The certification programs allow all candidates to meet “highly qualified” designation, as defined by No Child Left Behind.  The unit designs, implements, and evaluates curriculum and experiences for candidates to acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to help all students learn. Day-to-day operations of and teaching within the unit occur on the main campus of the college, and it maintains the Teacher Education Center, a resource laboratory for candidates majoring in teacher education, for the student preparation needs.   These experiences include working with diverse higher education and school faculty, diverse candidates, and diverse students in P-12 schools

Teacher Education Programs

The Stillman Teacher Education Program (STEP) is comprised of a set of prescribed field experiences. All students taking any education courses requiring field placement are required to join the Student Alabama Education Association (SAEA). Entry, retention requirements, courses, and regulations prepare students for state certification and successful careers as teachers.  The program includes preparation for students who wish to be elementary teachers and identifies professional courses essential for completing teacher preparation that leads to certification at the secondary level.  Students majoring in physical education, music or art may obtain P-12 certification in their teaching field. Students majoring in mathematics, biology, history, or English/language arts may obtain secondary certification in their teaching field. The program maintains the Teacher Education Resource Center, a laboratory for students majoring in a teacher education area.

Stillman College complies with requirements and rules issued by the Alabama State Department of Education for teacher certification. Published admission and curriculum requirements will be modified when necessary to reflect changes in state requirements. The College guarantees that anyone who successfully completes its rigorous Teacher Education Program will meet the requirements for certification and employment, and when appropriate, graduate school.

Each program in teacher education complies with teacher certification requirements prescribed by the Alabama State Department of Education.  The Department of Teacher Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Faculty

Dr. Tamara Lindsay Roberts is originally from Greenville, Mississippi.  She earned a B.S. degree from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, M.S.; M.ED from Mississippi University for Women, Columbus, M.S. and her Ph.D from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, Curriculum & Instruction/Elementary Education.  Dr. Roberts has been at Stillman for two and a half years.  Currently, she  is  a professor and Chair of the Department of Teacher Education.

Dr. Kimberly Glenn is a native of Chicago, Illinois. She completed her undergraduate studies at Alabama State University and her graduate work at Alabama A&M University. Dr. Glenn  has a Ph.D in Reading/Literacy. This is her first year at Stillman College. She teaches education courses and has been in higher education for five years.

Dr. Phyllis Williams resides in Bessemer, Alabama. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Oberlin College, in Ohio, a M.A. in Special Education from the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), and her Ph. D. in Special Education & Psychometrics from Auburn University, in Auburn, Alabama. She then went on to serve as post-doctorate fellow for Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland. She has been at Stillman since 2007, and has been in education since 1997.
