A native of Trenton, New Jersey, Debra Bass has served the A.M.E. Zion Church as a minister for 36 years. She has pastored churches in New Jersey and Alabama. She has held a number of positions within the Church including: Director of Ethnic Cooperation and Institutional Ministries; Pennsylvania Council of Churches, Harrisburg, PA; and Executive Director Ohio Council of Churches, Columbus, OH. Bass has served as an Adjunct Professor at Samford University and Hood Theological Seminary. Before accepting a position in the religion department at Stillman, she served as a full time professor at Miles College.

Bass is the widow of C.M.E. Church Bishop Richard O. Bass. The have one son, Joshua Daniel Bass. She has traveled all over the world and has studies six languages (Hebrew, Greek, Italian, French, German, Latin).
